This is the first in a three-part series about how a blog can move beyond the internet and onto weekly television. Read Part 2 here.
GottaGetBlogging.com –>Blog Talk TV
In case you missed the recent announcement, our weekly television show Blog Talk TV is expanding beyond its Virginia markets and heading to Bakersfield, Birmingham, Detroit, Indianapolis, and all of Central Florida, too. But our route to television was a bit more circuitous.
The Live Stream
In an effort to continue educating bloggers through a more interactive medium, FLBlogCon planning team members Ben Reed and Bess Auer began to live stream a weekly show from Bess’s kitchen. (Her kitchen was chosen as the set due to a lack of budget — Ha! — and the guys from Concrete Lion Pictures, with whom Bess had worked before, donated their production time at a significantly reduced rate — Fortunately!)
Thus a show was born and Ben and Bess invited guest bloggers on the live stream to share their best practices, and the viewers could join the chat room and ask questions. It was a fun format that caught the eye of Will Rodriguez, who is the program director for Cox Communications in Virginia.
Weekly TV Show on Cox
Will negotiated a deal with us to share our shows with his TV viewers on a weekly basis. So, this meant we switched from a live stream to regular TV format. To save production costs, we stayed in Bess’s kitchen and shot 4 to 5 episodes at a time, lining up the featured guests to film one after another on the same day. We delivered 20 episodes to Cox to complete our first season.
Journey to Bright House
Since we are located in Central Florida, we tend to showcase the big bloggers who live here, so it made sense that viewers here would be interested in seeing the show. Fortunately, Bright House has been a supporter of the blogosphere, delivering great wifi community wide and sponsoring our annual conference FLBlogCon. So, we reached out through our contacts to find out which person in their company would be the right one for us to pitch Blog Talk TV.
We finally connected with Kate Fox, the director of local programming, and she decided we were a good fit for on-demand under the technology category. So, now you can find Blog Talk TV on Bright House channel 999 anytime you want.
Reaction from Community
Of course friends and family have given great feedback, and our show is gaining a loyal following that is growing each week. The launch here in Florida has made a splash with lots of media coverage:
- From the Orlando Business Journal
- From the Orlando Sentinel
- From Orlando Tech Association, one of the largest meet ups of tech companies, entrepreneurs, and start ups in the country
- From Bright House
And, finally, Orange County Mayor Theresa Jacobs, who recognizes the power of blogging, added her thoughts:
The kick off of Blog Talk TV is an exciting development for our region, and offers a great opportunity for our tech community to showcase their expertise and capabilities. Through the unique medium of blogging, business owners and entrepreneurs can connect directly with interested audiences – from potential customers to project collaborators, blogging allows for seamless, effective communication. Through Blog Talk TV, Central Florida residents can learn from Bess Auer, Ben Reed, Josh Murdock, and other local tech leaders about how to empower themselves and their businesses through social media. I’m thrilled to support Blog Talk TV, and encourage all interested Orange County residents and business owners to tune in and start blogging!”
